Fried bananas are a welcomed treat at our house. My husband has made these for years for our kids. He was first introduced to them as a teenager while on a hunting trip with his father. The lodge host was from Puerto Rico, and he wanted to treat them to a common breakfast that he cooked for his family back home. The memory of that breakfast stuck with my husband, and he now makes them for his own famliy.
This is a simple recipe to turn this popular fruit into a nutritious and delicious dessert. There are many different recipes and techniques used to create this classic comfort depending on your part of the world. Having their origins mainly in Southeast Asia, fried bananas have become popular throughout many cultures.
Ours is a simple recipe that requires only a few ingredients and a little technique. Though many people use a deep frier for cooking their bananas, ours are pan fried with coconut oil. The toppings are endless, but we favor cinnamon and a drizzle of fresh local honey. For a sweeter treat, add vanilla ice cream or top with some fresh cream (for which you can never go wrong).
Ingredients:
- 6 slightly ripened bananas
- 3/4 cup refined coconut oil (175ml)
- Cinnamon
- Honey
- Vanilla ice cream (optional)
Directions:
1. Heat oil in medium skillet to 400 degrees F (200 C)

2. Peel and cut bananas lengthwise, then cut the sliced pieces in half. This helps them fit into the skillet better.
3. Next, carefully place bananas in hot oil, frying about 5 minutes on each side.

4. Once golden brown, remove bananas from oil and place on cooling rack for a couple minutes, to allow excess oil to drain.
5. Place bananas on plate and sprinkle cinnamon over all the pieces. Next, generously drizzle honey over them.
Enjoy your fried bananas!

Optional: Add some fresh vanilla ice cream!
