Our New DIY Rabbit Hutch
This is Our New DIY Rabbit Hutch. It was designed and built by my husband, with the help of some of our boys. Lumber was scarce and pretty expensive at the time of the build, so some of it was used with scraps that we already had on hand. Our large rabbit “Faye” seems to love it! This is a large hutch with room to hop around and a hidey spot for her to retire to when she feels like hiding. We also temporarily moved her indoor pen outside so that she can have more exercise and entertainment. In the heat we’ve been having here, she has been enjoying some air conditioning indoors as well. This particular rabbit is used to the indoors, so we are slowly conditioning her to outdoor living.
Winter Update:
It is now winter and we suspended a heat lamp in the hidey spot for her. We put her out before fall so she would get her winter coat, so the light may not be necessary. It’s been a mild winter here so far, but on the coldest nights I’ve noticed her spending more time in her warm spot. I moved her litter box in her hidey spot as well since she likes to lay in it and much timothy hay. Of course a lot rabbits don’t need this, but this is what she is used to, it’s important to keep it clean with fresh cob litter or bedding.
We still give her boxes because all rabbits enjoy a good box. Once she eats a good deal of it, we replace it with a new one. We also put a tarp around the wind exposed side once the colder weather began to hit. Usually you’d want to have a heated water dispenser to prevent freezing, I haven’t put one out yet because I haven’t really needed it, but it is ideal.
