How to Make Salt Dough

Here is a simple recipe on how to make salt dough. We had a of couple rainy days here recently and I needed a little something extra for my kiddos to do. So I pulled out these 3 simple ingredients to make some homemade salt dough. You can also let it dry and use it like clay.  It won’t be quite as strong as clay, but still works pretty well.

I love most all things creative/art, so I always like finding plenty of hands on crafts/activities for my kiddos to do. They all love play dough, especially during the pre-school years. Making their own dough adds another element of fun. What toddler doesn’t love pouring, stirring, mixing, and making a mess? Kids of all ages enjoy this, including me!

Ingredients/Supplies

  • Small mixing bowl and spoon
  • 1/2 cup of flour
  • 1/4 cup of salt
  • 1/4 cup of water

Directions:

How to Make Salt Dough1. Add water to your bowl, pour salt into the bowl and stir a bit.

2. Next, add flour a little at a time. Keep stirring until it is the consistency of dough. We also sometimes add everything at once and it still turns out the same in the end.

3. Take the dough out and knead it a few times. That’s it, you’re ready to play! You can use cookie cutters, existing play dough tools, toothpicks, or just about anything to help  make your creations. Of course, we think using our hands is the most fun!

FYI: You can add a drop of food coloring to your water mixture if you want to get more colorful. Better yet, try to find some natural dyes aroung the house. Once you’re done playing, wrap up your dough in plastic wrap or place in a freezer/snack bag and refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Optional: You can also sculpt a design and let it dry for several days. You can even add some paint to it once it is dry.
